Live in Croatia While Working Remotely Abroad
Croatia provides a dedicated Temporary Residence pathway for qualifying Digital Nomads.
The programme allows eligible third-country nationals to live in Croatia while working remotely through communication technology for a foreign employer or their own company registered outside Croatia.
The applicant must not perform work or provide services to employers established in Croatia under the Digital Nomad residence basis.
CETO Global Immigration Consulting & Partners assists international remote professionals and entrepreneurs in assessing eligibility, preparing documentation and coordinating the Croatian Digital Nomad residence process.
A Digital Nomad is generally a third-country national who works remotely using communication technology for a foreign company or their own foreign company that is not registered in Croatia.
The Digital Nomad pathway is designed for remote foreign-source work. It is not an ordinary Croatian employment permit.
The programme can potentially be suitable for location-independent professionals such as:
The Croatian Digital Nomad residence framework is intended for persons who are not citizens of the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland.
Digital Nomad Temporary Residence can currently be granted for up to 18 months.
If the original Digital Nomad residence was granted for less than 18 months, an extension can be requested within the statutory framework, provided the total residence period does not exceed the 18-month maximum.
Up to 18 Months
An extension application should be submitted no later than 60 days before the existing residence expires.
The extension mechanism does not mean unlimited renewal. The overall statutory limit must be respected.
After the expiry of the previous qualifying Digital Nomad residence, a new Digital Nomad application can generally be submitted only after 6 months have passed.
The applicant must demonstrate genuine remote professional activity. This can include employment by a company outside Croatia or business activity through the applicant's own company outside Croatia.
A Digital Nomad must not use this residence status to perform ordinary employment for a Croatian employer or provide services to employers located in Croatia.
If the applicant intends to work for a Croatian company, other pathways such as the Stay & Work Permit or EU Blue Card should be assessed.
Applicants must demonstrate sufficient financial resources to support their stay in Croatia.
Important: These amounts change with Croatian salary statistics. CETO must verify the current financial threshold before every application.
€3,622.50 Per Month
The statutory benchmark is 2.5 times the average monthly net salary paid in Croatia during the previous year.
Instead of regular monthly income, applicants can demonstrate sufficient funds covering the entire intended residence period.
Current examples: €43,470 for 12 months or €65,205 for 18 months.
The financial requirement increases for each additional qualifying family member, life partner, or informal life partner.
Qualifying close family members can potentially join the Digital Nomad in Croatia. This includes spouses, children, life partners, and informal life partners, subject to Croatian family residence requirements.
The principal Digital Nomad's residence must first be approved before a family application based on that status can succeed. Croatian law can recognise qualifying unmarried partnerships with evidence of the genuine relationship.
The application is submitted online, through a Croatian Embassy/Consulate, or at the competent Croatian Police Administration.
The Croatian authorities review the documentation and remote work evidence.
Applicants requiring a visa must obtain a Long-Stay Visa (Type D) after residence approval but before entering Croatia.
After arrival, the applicant must complete address registration and biometric residence card formalities.
Not under the Digital Nomad residence basis. The programme is designed for foreign remote employment or foreign business activity.
Yes, but if you intend to actively work through it, a different business or employment immigration route must be assessed.
The current maximum Digital Nomad Temporary Residence period is 18 months.
Generally no. A new Digital Nomad application is subject to a 6-month waiting period after the expiry of the previous status.
Tax treatment depends on residence duration, source of income, and applicable treaties. CETO coordinates tax questions with qualified Croatian tax professionals.
Particular caution is required. Croatia's Long-Term Residence rules generally exclude certain temporary residence periods, including Digital Nomad residence, from the standard five-year calculation.
