What is the Post-Study Residence Permit?

The Residence Permit for the Purpose of Seeking a Job or Starting a Business allows qualifying third-country nationals to remain temporarily in Hungary after completing qualifying studies or research.

The primary purpose of this permit is to allow graduates and researchers time to either seek suitable professional employment or prepare for establishing a business in Hungary.

Eligibility

This pathway is specifically designed for third-country nationals who currently hold a valid Hungarian residence permit for one of the following purposes:

Important: The applicant must still hold a valid student or research residence permit at the time of application.

Qualifying Studies

Applicants must have successfully completed a qualifying degree or study program in Hungary.

Qualifying Research

Researchers who have completed their qualifying research activities in Hungary are eligible.

Application Deadline & Procedure

The application must be submitted within Hungary through the Enter Hungary electronic platform.

Timing is critical: the application must be submitted at least 15 days before the expiry of the current Student or Research Residence Permit.

15-Day Minimum Notice

Waiting until the previous residence permit has already expired can result in losing access to this post-study pathway.

Core Requirements

The applicant must demonstrate that their qualifying studies or research have been successfully completed.

Professional Correspondence

The employment sought or the business intended to be started must correspond to the level of the applicant's completed studies or research.

Employment Evidence

For those seeking employment, evidence can include a confirmation from the competent employment authority or a confirmation from a Hungarian business organization showing that actual employment will begin within 3 months.

General Conditions for Stay

Applicants must satisfy standard Hungarian residence requirements:

  • Sufficient financial resources for living expenses, accommodation, healthcare, and return travel.
  • A declared existing and real Hungarian address for accommodation.
  • Access to comprehensive healthcare coverage or sufficient funds to cover healthcare costs.
  • A valid passport and the ability to leave Hungary (e.g., travel ticket or funds).

Evidence of funds can include bank statements, savings, regular income, or other financial assets.
