Poland provides a dedicated Temporary Residence Permit for qualifying third-country nationals who intend to conduct scientific research or development work in Poland.

The official pathway is the Temporary Residence Permit for the Purpose of Conducting Scientific Research, designed for researchers working with approved Polish scientific institutions.

CETO Global Immigration Consulting & Partners assists international researchers, scientific professionals, and research institutions in assessing Polish researcher residence requirements and coordinates the immigration process together with qualified legal and immigration professionals.

What is Researcher Residence?

Researcher Residence is a dedicated Polish immigration pathway for qualifying scientific and development professionals whose genuine purpose of residence in Poland is to conduct scientific research or development work.

The research activity must justify residence in Poland for more than 3 months. The permit allows qualifying third-country nationals and stateless persons to reside in Poland while working on scientific research projects at approved institutions.

  • Scientists
  • Academic Researchers
  • Research Professionals
  • Development Professionals
  • University Researchers

Core Requirements

Professional Qualification

Master's Degree or Equivalent

The researcher must hold a professional qualification that enables them to pursue a doctoral degree in Poland.

This generally means a qualification corresponding to at least a Master's degree or another equivalent professional qualification. The applicant does not necessarily need to be undertaking a PhD.

Approved Institution

Official Hosting Approval

The research must be carried out at a scientific institution based in Poland and approved by the competent Polish authority to host foreign researchers.

Not every company, laboratory, or university automatically qualifies; the institution's official eligibility should be verified before the immigration application is prepared.

Hosting Agreement

Formal Research Relationship

A central requirement is a qualifying Hosting Agreement with the approved Polish research institution.

The agreement establishes the researcher's relationship with the institution and details the subject of the research, remuneration, and employment or research conditions.

Financial & Health Requirements

Applicants must satisfy the applicable Polish financial and healthcare requirements to ensure they have sufficient resources for their stay.

  • Financial Resources: Sufficient funds for living expenses, accommodation-related costs, and return travel.
  • Health Insurance: Qualifying Polish healthcare coverage or insurance covering medical treatment costs in Poland.
  • Legal Stay: The applicant must satisfy legal-stay requirements at the time of submission.

Permit Validity & Authority

The Researcher Residence Permit is generally granted for the duration of the scientific research, for more than 3 months up to a maximum of 3 years.

The permit is not automatically renewed. If research continues beyond the validity of the existing permit, a new application must be submitted before the current permit expires.

Applications are decided by the competent Voivode according to the researcher's place of residence in Poland. The Head of the Office for Foreigners acts as the second-instance authority.

Up to 3 Years

Application Procedure & Fees

Applications are submitted through Poland's MOS (Case Handling Module) under the applicable electronic residence procedure. The official processing period for a complete application is generally 60 days.

  • Stamp Duty: The current government fee for this Temporary Residence Permit is 340 PLN.
  • Residence Card: A separate fee applies for the issuance of the residence document.
  • Biometrics: Applicants must complete identification and biometric formalities (photo and fingerprints).
  • Schengen Travel: The permit allows for short-term trips within the Schengen Area according to applicable rules.

European Researcher Mobility

One of the major advantages of the European researcher framework is Intra-EU Researcher Mobility, allowing qualifying researchers to conduct part of their research in other participating EU Member States.

Short-Term Mobility

Up to 180 Days

Researchers with a 'RESEARCHER' permit from another EU state can potentially conduct research in Poland for up to 180 days within any 360-day period.

The Polish institution must submit the required notification to the Head of the Office for Foreigners.

Long-Term Mobility

180 to 360 Days

For stays exceeding the short-term period, a dedicated Temporary Residence Permit for Long-Term Researcher Mobility may be required.

This route is for researchers who already hold an appropriate researcher permit or long-stay visa issued by another participating EU Member State.

Post-Research Residence

Upon completing qualifying scientific research in Poland, researchers may potentially obtain a separate temporary residence permit to remain in Poland for 9 months.

This extension is designed to allow professionals to seek employment or prepare for conducting business activity in Poland.

9-Month Extension

  • Job Seeking: Use the 9-month period to secure qualifying employment.
  • Business Preparation: Prepare to start a business or commercialise technology.
  • One-Time Benefit: This permit is generally granted once directly following research completion.

Family & Transitions

Researcher Residence provides family immigration opportunities through the family reunification framework, with special rules for researchers using Long-Term Mobility.

Researchers can also transition to other long-term pathways if they secure appropriate roles or business opportunities.

  • Family Reunification: Residence for qualifying family members.
  • Transition to EU Blue Card: For highly qualified professionals meeting salary and qualification thresholds.
  • Transition to Business Residence: If establishing a qualifying company in Poland.
