Family Reunification

Bring Your Family to Poland

← Back to Poland

Poland provides family reunification pathways allowing qualifying family members of eligible third-country nationals legally residing in Poland to join or continue living with them.

The family relationship must be genuine, properly documented, and recognized under Polish law for the purpose of living together in Poland for more than three months.

CETO Global Immigration Consulting & Partners assists international families in assessing Polish family reunification options and coordinates the immigration process together with qualified legal and immigration professionals.

What is Family Reunification?

Family Reunification allows certain qualifying family members of a foreign national legally residing in Poland to obtain residence to establish or continue family life together.

The exact residence rights depend on the sponsor's immigration status, the nature of the family relationship, the applicant's age, and the sponsor's residence history.

Who Can Qualify?

Family reunification primarily applies to immediate family members of the sponsor:

Spouses

A husband or wife in a marriage recognized under Polish law. The marriage must be genuine and not entered into solely to circumvent immigration rules.

Minor Children

Biological or adopted children under the age of 18, including children of both spouses or children of one spouse where parental authority requirements are met.

Other Family Situations

In specific cases, separate Polish residence possibilities may exist for other family members or unmarried partners who demonstrate genuine family life with a Polish citizen or another qualifying person.

Who Can Sponsor?

The sponsor must hold an eligible Polish immigration status. Qualifying statuses include:

Long-Term Residents

  • Polish Permanent Residence Permit
  • EU Long-Term Resident Status in Poland

Professional & Research Categories

  • EU Blue Card holders
  • Scientific Research Residence holders
  • Long-Term Researcher Mobility holders
  • Intra-Corporate Transfer (ICT) Residence & Mobility

Protection & Humanitarian Status

  • Refugee Status
  • Subsidiary Protection
  • Humanitarian Residence

Temporary Residence Holders

Certain qualifying Temporary Residence Permit holders who meet specific residence-history requirements.

The Waiting Period for Temporary Residents

General vs. Fast-Track Categories

For many ordinary Temporary Residence Permit holders, family reunification becomes available only after the sponsor has resided in Poland for at least 2 years on consecutive permits.

Immediately before the application, the sponsor must generally hold a permit granted for at least 1 year.

Advantage: EU Blue Card holders, qualifying researchers, and ICT holders do not generally need to wait for this two-year history to qualify for family reunification.

Marriage & Parental Documentation

Marriage alone does not guarantee approval. Polish authorities may examine whether the relationship is genuine and properly documented. Where only one parent is relocating a child, additional documentation concerning parental responsibility is required.

  • Marriage Certificate (with Apostille or Legalization if foreign)
  • Evidence of a joint household, living together, and communication history
  • Parental responsibility, custody, and consent of the other parent (for children)
  • Sworn translations into Polish for all foreign-language documents
  • Valid passports and birth certificates

Financial & Social Requirements

Applicants must generally demonstrate sufficient resources to maintain the family without relying on public assistance.

Stable & Regular Income

Maintenance can be provided by the sponsor, the applicant, or another legally obliged person.

  • 1,010 PLN per month for a person living alone
  • 823 PLN per month per person for those living in a family

Health Insurance

Appropriate coverage through Polish public healthcare or private insurance covering medical treatment in Poland.

Accommodation

A guaranteed place of residence in Poland, evidenced by a lease agreement, property documentation, or an accommodation declaration.

Application Procedures & MOS System

The method of filing depends on whether the family member is already in Poland or is applying from abroad.

Since 27 April 2026, residence applications are generally submitted electronically through the MOS (Case Handling Module) for those inside Poland.

  • Inside Poland: Applications are submitted through the applicable MOS electronic procedure and must be electronically signed.
  • Outside Poland: The sponsor in Poland can initiate the procedure. These applications typically use the paper-based procedure.
  • Competent Authority: The application is handled by the competent Voivode according to the sponsor's place of residence.

Employment & Business Rights

A major advantage of family reunification residence is broad access to the Polish labor market.

Qualifying holders can generally work in Poland without a separate work permit and may have access to conducting business activities.

Note: Unlike employer-specific permits, family residence holders with unrestricted access to the labor market are not tied to a single employer.

Family of Polish Citizens

A Separate Framework

Foreign spouses of Polish citizens apply under a different dedicated pathway rather than the standard 'Family Reunification' framework for foreign residents.

Crucially, the requirements for stable income, health insurance, and guaranteed accommodation are generally not imposed in the same way on spouses of Polish citizens.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I bring my family if I just arrived on a work permit?

It depends on your permit. EU Blue Card holders can sponsor family immediately. Ordinary Temporary Residence holders usually need to wait until they have 2 years of residence history.

Does my spouse need a separate work permit to work in Poland?

In most cases, no. One of the main benefits of family reunification residence is that it usually provides the right to work without an additional permit.

What if my marriage was registered outside of Poland?

The marriage must be recognized under Polish law. Foreign marriage certificates typically require an Apostille or legalization and a sworn translation into Polish.

Can children over 18 apply for family reunification?

Standard family reunification applies to minor children (under 18). Adult children may need to qualify under separate residence pathways based on their own circumstances.

How long is the family residence permit valid for?

It usually corresponds to the sponsor's permit validity. For sponsors with Permanent Residence, the family permit can be granted for up to 3 years.
