Volunteer Residence

Volunteer & Live in Poland

← Back to Poland

Poland provides a dedicated Temporary Residence pathway for certain third-country nationals participating in an approved European voluntary service programme.

This residence pathway allows qualifying participants to stay in Poland for more than 3 months while carrying out an approved voluntary activity.

CETO Global Immigration Consulting & Partners assists international applicants and host organisations in assessing eligibility, preparing documentation and coordinating the appropriate Polish immigration procedure together with qualified legal and immigration professionals.

What Is Volunteer Residence?

This is a specialised Temporary Residence pathway for foreign nationals participating in qualifying EUROPEAN VOLUNTARY SERVICE activities in Poland.

The applicant must participate through an organisation authorised under the applicable Polish and European framework.

Important

This is not a general residence permit for anyone who wants to:

  • Volunteer at a Private Company
  • Work Without Salary
  • Help a Friend's Business
  • Perform Ordinary Unpaid Employment
  • Create an Informal Volunteer Arrangement

The activity and host organisation must satisfy the applicable requirements.

Who Can Qualify?

The pathway can potentially be available to qualifying:

who intend to remain in Poland for more than 3 MONTHS.

  • Third-Country Nationals
  • International Volunteers
  • Participants in Approved European Voluntary Programmes

Approved Host Organisation

A central requirement is participation through an organisation approved to host foreign volunteers under the applicable framework.

The organisation's eligibility should therefore be verified before the residence application is prepared.

Volunteer Agreement

The applicant must have an appropriate agreement with the host organisation.

The agreement should establish the conditions of the voluntary service. The agreement can address:

  • Description of the Voluntary Activity
  • Duration of Service
  • Working / Service Conditions
  • Supervision
  • Training
  • Living Arrangements
  • Financial Support
  • Other Applicable Conditions

No Ordinary Salary

Volunteer Residence is not designed as ordinary paid employment.

The applicant participates in qualifying voluntary service rather than taking a normal commercial employment position.

Living Costs

The arrangements should ensure that the volunteer has sufficient resources to cover the applicable costs of residence in Poland.

Depending on the programme, support can potentially include:

  • Accommodation
  • Meals
  • Pocket Money
  • Travel Support
  • Other Programme Benefits

Financial Resources

The applicant must satisfy the applicable Polish requirements concerning sufficient financial resources.

The relevant statutory amounts should always be checked at the time of filing.

Health Insurance

The volunteer must have appropriate HEALTH INSURANCE or qualifying insurance covering medical treatment costs in Poland.

Accommodation

Appropriate accommodation in Poland should be secured and documented according to the applicable requirements.

Accommodation may potentially be arranged by the HOST ORGANISATION.

Documentation

Depending on the circumstances, documentation can include:

  • Valid Passport
  • Volunteer Agreement
  • Host Organisation Documentation
  • Evidence of Approved Programme Participation
  • Financial Documentation
  • Health Insurance
  • Accommodation Documentation
  • Other Required Supporting Documents

Application Procedure

The applicant must submit the Temporary Residence application according to the applicable Polish procedure while legally residing in Poland.

The application should be filed before the applicant's current legal stay expires.

Competent Authority

The application is decided by the COMPETENT VOIVODE according to the applicant's place of residence.

Permit Validity

The Temporary Residence Permit is generally connected to the duration of the qualifying voluntary service.

The period granted depends on the approved programme and the applicable statutory limits.

Volunteering vs. Employment

This distinction is extremely important.

Important: A company cannot simply classify a foreign worker as a "VOLUNTEER" to avoid Polish work-permit or employment requirements. The genuine nature of the activity is what matters.

Volunteering

The applicant participates in a qualifying voluntary service programme.

Employment

The foreign national performs paid work for an employer under the applicable Polish labour and immigration framework.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can any NGO sponsor me?

No. The host organisation and programme must satisfy the applicable requirements.

Can a private company use this route?

This route should not be used as a substitute for ordinary employment. A commercial company seeking to employ a foreign national should assess the appropriate WORK PERMIT / EMPLOYMENT RESIDENCE pathway.

Do I receive a salary?

The pathway concerns voluntary service rather than ordinary employment. Programme-based support can nevertheless be provided according to the applicable arrangements.

Can I take another job?

Do not assume that Volunteer Residence provides unrestricted labour-market access. Any separate employment should be assessed independently under Polish immigration and employment law.

Can my family come with me?

Family immigration possibilities depend on the applicant's residence status and the individual circumstances. Volunteer Residence should not automatically be treated as providing the same family-reunification rights as categories such as the EU Blue Card.

Can I stay after the volunteer programme?

Potentially, but only where another appropriate immigration basis exists. For example, the applicant may later qualify independently for Employment Residence, Study Residence, EU Blue Card, Business Residence, Family Residence, or Another Qualifying Status.

Does volunteering lead directly to Permanent Residence?

No. Permanent Residence and EU Long-Term Residence are separate immigration statuses with their own requirements.

Does it lead to Polish citizenship?

Not directly. Citizenship requires satisfaction of separate Polish nationality requirements.

Example

A third-country national is accepted into a qualifying European voluntary programme in Poland.

An approved Polish host organisation provides the required volunteer agreement and programme documentation.

The participant has appropriate insurance, resources and accommodation.

Subject to the remaining immigration requirements, the person may potentially obtain Temporary Residence for the qualifying voluntary service.

This pathway can potentially be relevant for:

  • International Volunteers

International Experience Through European Voluntary Service

For qualifying participants, Poland provides a dedicated residence pathway connected with approved European voluntary service.

Because this is a specialised immigration category, both the programme and host organisation must satisfy the applicable requirements.

CETO can assess eligibility and coordinate the appropriate immigration procedure together with qualified Polish legal and immigration professionals.

Volunteer Residence is a specialised Temporary Residence pathway and should not be confused with ordinary unpaid work. The applicant must participate in a qualifying voluntary programme and satisfy the applicable immigration requirements, and the host organisation must meet the relevant requirements.

Volunteer Residence should not be used to circumvent Polish employment or work-permit rules. It does not automatically provide unrestricted labour-market access, Permanent Residence or Polish citizenship.
