Graduate Residence / Job-Seeking After Graduation

9-Month Residence for Polish University Graduates

← Back to Poland

Poland provides a dedicated Temporary Residence Permit for qualifying international graduates who have completed higher education in Poland and want to remain in the country to seek employment or prepare to start business activity.

The permit provides qualifying graduates with 9 months to build the next stage of their professional future in Poland.

CETO Global Immigration Consulting & Partners assists international graduates in assessing their eligibility and planning the transition from studies to employment, highly qualified work or entrepreneurship in Poland.

What is the Graduate Residence Permit?

The official pathway is a: TEMPORARY RESIDENCE PERMIT DUE TO OTHER CIRCUMSTANCES FOR A GRADUATE OF A POLISH UNIVERSITY.

It is specifically designed to allow qualifying graduates to remain in Poland after completing their education.

The residence permit can be used for:

  • Seeking Employment
  • Preparing to Conduct Business Activity

Who Can Qualify?

The pathway can potentially be available to qualifying:

  • Third-Country Nationals
  • Stateless Persons

The applicant must have graduated from a Polish higher-education institution.

Qualifying Graduates

The framework covers qualifying graduates who have completed:

  • First-Cycle Higher Education
  • Second-Cycle Higher Education
  • Long-Cycle Master's Studies
  • Doctoral School

The graduate must have obtained the corresponding Polish diploma.

Qualifications Can Include

Depending on the programme:

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Engineer's Degree
  • Master's Degree
  • Master Engineer's Degree
  • Doctoral Degree
  • Equivalent Qualifying Titles

Polish University Requirement

This specific pathway is intended for graduates of Polish higher-education institutions.

It is not a general European graduate visa for people who studied in another country.

Example

Master's Graduate in Warsaw

A third-country national completes a Master's degree at a university in Warsaw. The graduate wants to remain in Poland but has not yet found an employer.

Instead of immediately leaving Poland after graduation, the graduate may potentially obtain the dedicated 9-month Graduate Residence Permit to search for employment.

Application Timing

This is extremely important.

Do Not Leave Poland Before Applying: the application cannot be submitted from abroad. If the graduate leaves Poland after obtaining the diploma without properly applying for this permit, they can lose the opportunity to obtain this specific Graduate Residence Permit.

Important for CETO clients: the transition should therefore be planned before completing the student residence stage. Graduates should not wait until their legal residence has expired.

The application must be submitted immediately after obtaining the diploma, while the graduate is still legally residing in Poland in connection with their studies.

Permit Validity

The Graduate Residence Permit is granted for 9 months.

One-Time Permit: the permit is granted once. It cannot simply be renewed for another nine months.

9 Months

What Happens After 9 Months?

Before the Graduate Residence Permit expires, the graduate must qualify for another appropriate residence basis if they want to continue living in Poland.

Potential pathways can include:

  • Employment Residence
  • EU Blue Card
  • Business Activity Residence
  • Family Residence
  • Another Qualifying Residence Permit

Job-Seeking Purpose

The graduate can use the nine-month period to actively search for employment in Poland.

Evidence of job search can potentially include:

  • CV Registration on Recruitment Platforms
  • Job Applications
  • Communication With Employers
  • Recruitment Interviews
  • Employment Negotiations
  • Other Evidence of Active Job Seeking

Important - Already Found a Job

If the graduate has already started working, or has already found an employer ready to hire them, this particular Graduate Residence Permit is generally not the appropriate route.

The appropriate employment-based residence pathway should instead be assessed.

Example

Graduate With an Immediate Job Offer

A graduate receives a qualifying job offer immediately after completing university. Instead of applying for the nine-month job-seeking permit, the graduate should assess the appropriate Employment Residence or, where applicable, EU Blue Card.

The Head of the Office for Foreigners acts as the second-instance authority in applicable appeal proceedings.

How Graduate Residence Compares

Student Residence

Allows qualifying residence primarily for the purpose of studying.

Graduate Residence

Provides a short transition period after graduation for job seeking or business preparation.

Work Residence

Designed for a foreign national who already has qualifying employment, unlike Graduate Residence, which is designed for a graduate who is still searching.

EU Blue Card

Requires qualifying highly skilled employment and satisfaction of the applicable Blue Card requirements. Graduate Residence does not require the applicant to already have qualifying highly skilled employment.

Post-Research Residence

A similar but separate pathway, designed for qualifying researchers who have completed scientific research or development work in Poland, rather than qualifying graduates of Polish higher-education institutions.

Long-Term Strategy

Graduate Residence should be viewed as a transition permit rather than a permanent immigration solution.

No. The application for this specific permit cannot be submitted from abroad.

When should I apply?

Immediately after obtaining the qualifying Polish diploma while you are still legally residing in Poland in connection with your studies.

Can I apply after graduating in another EU country?

Do I need to have a job?

No. One of the principal purposes of the permit is precisely to allow the graduate to search for employment.

What if I already have an employer?

If you have already started working or have found an employer ready to employ you, the Graduate Residence Permit is generally not the appropriate pathway. An employment-based residence permit should instead be assessed.

Can I start a business?

The nine-month permit can be granted for the purpose of preparing to conduct business activity. However, continued residence based on entrepreneurship requires satisfaction of the separate Business Activity Residence requirements.

Can I later get an EU Blue Card?

Potentially yes, if you obtain qualifying highly skilled employment and satisfy the applicable Blue Card requirements.

Can I remain in Poland after the 9 months?

Potentially yes. However, before the Graduate Residence Permit expires, you must qualify for another appropriate Polish residence basis.

Can I work in other EU countries with this permit?

No. A Polish Graduate Residence Permit does not provide unrestricted employment rights in other EU Member States. A separate legal basis would be required.

Graduate. Stay. Build Your Future.
