Hungary provides a dedicated residence pathway for eligible third-country nationals who have been admitted to qualifying educational institutions in Hungary.

The Residence Permit for the Purpose of Studies allows international students to live in Hungary while completing qualifying full-time studies or certain preparatory programmes.

The Residence Permit for the Purpose of Studies is designed for qualifying third-country nationals who intend to pursue eligible education in Hungary.

Who Can Apply?

A residence permit for studies may be available to a third-country national who:

Admission

Has been admitted to a qualifying educational institution.

Studies

Intends to undertake eligible full-time studies.

Language Skills

Has the required language skills for the proposed studies.

Financial Resources

Can demonstrate sufficient financial resources to cover their stay.

Accommodation

Has appropriate accommodation in Hungary.

Healthcare

Has healthcare coverage or sufficient resources to cover healthcare costs.

Travel Document

Holds a valid travel document.

Immigration Rules

Meets all other applicable Hungarian immigration requirements.

Qualifying Institutions

The pathway is generally available to students undertaking full-time studies at state-recognised Hungarian higher education institutions or foreign higher education institutions authorised to operate in Hungary.

Applicants must establish their qualifying student relationship with the educational institution through an admission certificate or student status certificate.

Preparatory Courses

A Residence Permit for Studies may also be available to a third-country national participating in a preparatory course organised by a higher education institution, provided the course satisfies the applicable Hungarian requirements.

Financial Resources & Tuition

Applicants must demonstrate sufficient lawful resources to cover living expenses, accommodation, healthcare, and return or onward travel.

Evidence can include bank statements, savings, scholarship documentation, regular income, or financial support from an eligible family member.

Where the student is required to pay tuition fees, evidence of payment (such as tuition payment confirmations or university payment documentation) may be required as part of the application.

Application Procedure

Application from Outside Hungary

Students who are not entitled to enter Hungary visa-free generally submit their first application through the competent Hungarian Embassy or Consulate in their country of nationality or habitual residence.

Visa-Free Students

Students legally entitled to enter Hungary without a visa may generally submit their residence application during their lawful stay in Hungary through the Enter Hungary platform or the competent Regional Directorate.

Schengen C Visa Holders

A student staying in Hungary solely on the basis of a short-stay Schengen C visa cannot generally use that short stay to submit a first Student Residence application from within Hungary.

Validity & Extension

The Residence Permit for the Purpose of Studies is generally issued for at least 1 year, or for the duration of the programme if it is shorter.

The permit can be issued for a maximum period of 3 years and can be extended for periods of 1 to 3 years, subject to continued eligibility and study duration.

Maximum 3 Years Per Issuance

The validity of the residence permit cannot exceed the validity period of the applicant's travel document.

Working While Studying

An important advantage of Student Residence is the possibility of employment during studies.

A qualifying Student Residence holder may work during the study period for a maximum of 30 hours per week.

Outside the study period, the student may work full-time for a maximum of 90 days per year, subject to applicable employment requirements.

EU Student Mobility

Certain third-country nationals already holding qualifying student residence in another EU Member State may potentially study in Hungary under the EU student mobility framework.

Mobility can be carried out under a Student Mobility Residence Permit or a Student Mobility Certificate, generally valid for up to 360 days.

Important Restrictions

Family Reunification

A holder of a Hungarian Residence Permit for the Purpose of Studies generally cannot sponsor family reunification on the basis of this permit. Specific limited exceptions may apply to children born in Hungary during the parent's residence.

Long-Term Residence

Student Residence is primarily an educational pathway. A holder of this permit cannot obtain a National Residence Card on the basis of this residence status.

After Graduation

Hungary provides an important transition opportunity for qualifying graduates. Students who successfully complete their studies may apply for a Residence Permit for the Purpose of Seeking a Job or Starting a Business.

This post-study application must be submitted in Hungary at least 15 days before the Student Residence Permit expires.

Following the post-study period, a qualifying graduate may potentially transition to another Hungarian residence category depending on their employment or business activity.

Student Residence vs. EU Blue Card

What is the primary difference between Student Residence and the EU Blue Card?

Student Residence is designed for qualifying education and provides limited employment rights. The EU Blue Card is designed for highly qualified professional employment and is subject to specific qualification, employment, and salary requirements.

Can I transition from a Student Permit to an EU Blue Card?

Yes, a qualifying graduate who secures eligible highly qualified employment meeting the salary and qualification thresholds may potentially transition to an EU Blue Card after completing their studies.
