Nationality Restrictions
This residence category is not automatically available to nationals of every third country. The applicant must generally be a national of a country permitted under the applicable Hungarian Government Decree.

Work & Live in Hungary
Hungary provides a specific residence pathway for eligible third-country nationals who intend to perform actual employment in Hungary under a qualifying employment relationship.
The Residence Permit for the Purpose of Employment is designed for foreign workers who satisfy the applicable nationality, employment and immigration requirements.
CETO Global Immigration Consulting & Partners assists international employees and Hungarian employers in assessing eligibility and coordinates the immigration process together with qualified legal and immigration professionals.
A Residence Permit for the Purpose of Employment may be granted to qualifying third-country nationals whose purpose of residence is to perform actual work in Hungary for or under the direction of an employer for remuneration.
This pathway can also apply where an employee remains employed by a company established in a third country but performs work in Hungary under an agreement with a Hungarian employer.
This residence category is not automatically available to nationals of every third country. The applicant must generally be a national of a country permitted under the applicable Hungarian Government Decree.
The Hungarian minister responsible for employment policy may designate occupations for which this permit cannot be granted. The proposed occupation must be permitted under the rules applicable at the time of application.
The proposed employment must be genuine and comply with Hungarian employment law. The applicant generally needs a preliminary employment agreement or existing employment contract documentation.
In cases involving a third-country employer arrangement, the Hungarian employer is treated as the employer for immigration purposes. Documentation must include the agreement between the Hungarian and foreign employer and details of the work to be performed.
Evidence must be provided of sufficient resources to cover living costs, accommodation, healthcare, and return travel. This can include employment contracts, tax documentation, or bank statements.
Applicants must demonstrate suitable accommodation through a residential lease, proof of ownership, or courtesy accommodation documentation.
Access to healthcare in Hungary or sufficient financial means to cover costs must be demonstrated.
A valid passport is required, which must remain valid for at least 3 months after the expiry of the requested residence permit.
Applicants requiring a visa generally submit their first application at a Hungarian Embassy or Consulate. The application includes the visa needed to enter Hungary.
Third-country nationals allowed to enter Hungary visa-free may generally submit a first application from within Hungary through the Enter Hungary platform or a Regional Directorate.
The applicant must provide a facial photograph, fingerprints, and a signature specimen during the process.
The Residence Permit for the Purpose of Employment is generally granted for a maximum of 2 years and can be extended by 1 additional year.
The total validity calculated from the date of first issuance cannot generally exceed 3 years. After this cycle, a holder wishing to remain longer may need to submit a new application at least 40 days before expiry.
Maximum 3-Year Total Validity Cycle
Extensions must be submitted in Hungary via Enter Hungary no earlier than 90 days and no later than 30 days before expiry.
The permit is linked to approved employment. Any change in employer, job position, or place of work requires an extension or modification procedure.
During the validity or after expiry, an application for another residence title cannot generally be submitted from within Hungary. Careful planning is required.
Family reunification is generally not available for holders of this permit. A narrow exception exists for children born in Hungary to a permit holder.
Holders cannot obtain a National Residence Card (permanent residency) on the basis of this residence category.
Depending on qualifications and salary, other pathways may be more suitable:

Intended for highly qualified professionals with specific salary thresholds, offering significantly stronger family and long-term settlement advantages.
