What is the Research Residence Permit?

The Residence Permit for the Purpose of Research is designed for third-country nationals who intend to carry out a research project in Hungary.

A central requirement is a valid hosting agreement concluded between the researcher and a research organisation accredited under the applicable Hungarian regulations.

Who Can Qualify?

The pathway can potentially be available to qualifying:

Researchers

Scientists

Academic Researchers

International Research Professionals

Researchers Participating in International Projects

Hosting Agreement & Accredited Organisation

The hosting agreement serves as evidence of the applicant's research purpose in Hungary. The Hungarian host organisation must be accredited under the applicable regulations.

The research organisation must also provide a written commitment concerning potential costs connected with the researcher's stay, including potential removal costs if the researcher remains beyond the authorised period without sufficient resources.

General Residence Conditions

Applicants must satisfy several general requirements for Hungarian residence:

Financial Resources

Applicants must demonstrate sufficient lawful resources to cover living expenses, accommodation, healthcare, and return or onward travel.

Evidence can include employer income documentation, tax records, foreign income, bank statements, savings, or investments.

Accommodation

Applicants must declare a real Hungarian address. Under current procedures, a separate accommodation document is generally not required to be attached solely for this declaration.

Proof of access to comprehensive healthcare services in Hungary or sufficient financial resources to cover healthcare expenses is required.

Return or Onward Travel

Demonstrated through a valid passport and either a travel ticket or sufficient financial resources to cover travel costs.

Application Channels

Applicants outside Hungary generally submit their first application through a Hungarian Embassy or Consulate.

If satisfying specific requirements, applications can be submitted within Hungary via the Enter Hungary platform or the competent Regional Directorate.

Application by Research Organisation

The host research organisation may submit the application on behalf of the researcher with their written consent, handled electronically through Enter Hungary. Biometric procedures must still be completed in person.

Processing & Validity

The official procedural administration period is 15 days, with a decision on the merits typically adopted within 60 days.

The permit is generally valid for at least 1 year, or the duration of the hosting agreement if shorter. The maximum validity per issuance is 2 years.
